History of the Albino Foundation (TAF)
The Albino Foundation is an independent voluntary organization that is focused on changing the socio-economic perspective of Albinos worldwide. Since May 2006 when Jake Epelle, an albino founded the organization, so much consciousness about the plight and social exclusion of albinos have been raised. It has since become a rallying point for albinos all over Nigeria, with those around the West African region signifying interest in a sub-regional collaboration.
An international businessman of repute, with business offices in Nigeria and the United Sates of America, Mr. Epelle took the onerous task of creating a platform for other albinos through the Albino Foundation (TAF). Mr. Epelle’s story as an albino is one of triumph over challenges. His profile shows a sterling record in print journalism, broadcasting, advertising and public relations. Jake Epelle is affecting a dramatic shift in the way society approach development needs of albinos. Through the Albino Foundation (TAF), he is changing the mindset of the society by creating a “living success story” among albinos. The TAF strategy is to optimize the utilization of available resources both personnel and material and to cater to all the therapeutic requirements of albinos.
The TAF work enables albinos to experience realities and challenges that people without albinism confront on regular basis. TAF’s approach focuses on the personality of albinos that are damaged either by rejection or discrimination. The approach integrates psychological and mental function, allowing albinos to rise above their challenges. Through various empowerment programmes, TAF encourages albinos to participate and engage in everything from the highly sophisticated like academic pursuits to the physically challenging like sports activities.
To spread and reach the public at large, TAF has designed a comprehensive model that can integrate all albinos nationally and internationally- where albinos find assistance in developing their full potentials. TAF focuses on providing albinos with learning situations and experiences that will leverage their independence. To address stereotypes about albinos and to change the attitude of the society towards albinos, TAF exposes albinos to be competitive in a world where rejection and discrimination have forced many albinos into the closet. TAF has organized many workshops and trainings whereby professionals, members of the academia, top government functionaries and other albinos who have made their marks in diverse fields have come to address members of the foundation during the workshops.
TAF is not relenting in engaging authorities for policy shift towards the benefit of albinos. The Foundation is creatively mobilizing local, state, and federal government authorities to support the course of albinos. This mission has seen TAF made several correspondences, contacts and advocacy visits to the President, Federal republic of Nigeria, federal and state ministries like health, education etc where top government functionaries, ministers have granted it audience. In carrying out these programmes, TAF has also engaged the media and international development institutions. TAF is not content with achieving result in Nigeria alone, but hopes to expand these programmes to other countries of the world.
